The hardest part of requesting money wasn’t the request. It was finding the right person.

Cash App’s existing request flow had a silent failure mode: wrong phone number, email typo, or a name shared by hundreds of people, and your request went to a stranger. Payment links removed the assumption that the sender knows exactly who they’re looking for. Generate a link, drop it where the conversation is already happening, and the payment comes pre-filled.

The project started as Listings, scoped to goods and services. We opened it up to everything (e.g. rent, a haircut, splitting lunch, home repair). Payment links works for anything someone needs to get paid for without requiring a storefront or a formal request flow to make it work.
