Over a holiday break in December 2023, I redesigned the Square Appointments calendar entirely on my own initiative. (I know … unsolicited redesigns have a reputation, but this one earned its keep.) What started as a personal exploration turned into a rallying artifact that got product and engineering aligned faster than any formal process would have.
Two problems with Square’s calendar: pending appointments were buried, and in-progress appointments weren’t obvious at a glance. The redesign surfaced both the calendar within the existing container. No architectural changes — intentional to keep the scope believable.
It became the main Square Appointments initiative for 2024. Three months into the build, a company reprioritization put it on hold.
